EPA issues big fine to Frontier Refinery
(2009-10-01)
(wpr) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking a nearly $7 million fine against a Cheyenne refinery for allegedly dumping hazardous waste into a pond designed to hold storm water.
The EPA says the Frontier Refinery used the pond illegally since
at least 2000.
A spokeswoman for Houston-based Frontier Oil Corp. says the EPA
action is surprising because the refinery has been working closely
with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality to clean up
the pond.
The EPA leveled 59 counts against Frontier on Wednesday
including illegal management of hazardous waste. Mike Risner, EPA's
regional director of legal enforcement, says it's part of a
nationwide EPA crackdown on the improper use of wastewater ponds.
