Local Democrats call for national action on health care
(2009-08-21)
(wpr) - The effort to get support for President Obama's health care policy has gone local. Friday leaders of the Wyoming Democratic Party held a press conference to argue in favor of Obama's policies and to try and dispel what they say are myths about the plan. State Representative Pete Jorgensen, says he thinks in Wyoming there is no choice but to argue for national reforms because the Republican dominated legislature is not acting.
"We just do not have that political will in this state and I think part of it is attributable to our independent spirit and that's laudable, but it doesn't solve the problem. The other part of it is that clearly we have a monopoly of health insurance available to people who are not covered by their employers."
Several studies have shown that over two thirds of those people receive their insurance from a single company; Blue Cross Blue Shield. The Democrats say that President Obama's policy will create more options for Wyomingites and ensure they don't lose insurance if they get sick.
