Snowmobiles allowed on Sylvan Pass in Yellowstone
snowmobile travel in Yellowstone National Park to 540 guided trips a day under a management decision issued today.
The decision was signed by Park Service Regional Director Mike Snyder. It follows preliminary numbers the agency proposed on
snowmobile travel.
The decision also specifies the agency will allow Sylvan Pass in Yellowstone to remain open for snowmobiles. That decision marks a reversal for the Park Service, which had proposed closing the pass because of avalanche danger.
The state of Wyoming and many area residents had protested any closure of Sylvan Pass. They say keeping the pass open is critical to recreation and the area economy.
Park Service officials say Yellowstone will use helicopters and cannons to control avalanches on the pass this winter. In following winters, the agency says it will stop trying to control avalanches and allow snowmobiles when conditions are safe. © Copyright 2012, wpr
