The Powder River Basin (PRB) is home to a population of greater sage-grouse on the eastern edge of its range. It is an isolated population, susceptible to local extinction in the event of a large wildfire, West Nile virus outbreak, or other catastrophic event. Further, the PRB has gone through extensive oil and gas development in the last
decade, with potential impacts on sage-grouse and their habitat.
Big Horn Environmental Consultants (BHEC) has spent several years monitoring sage-grouse in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. BHEC with support from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, conducted a monitoring study from 2008-2011 to measure the effects of oil and gas mitigation practices on sage-grouse. The lecture will present
preliminary results and interesting implications from this long-term population study.
