$11.6 billion health care industry
(2008-09-24)
(WOUB) - The amount is enormous -- $11.6 billion.

That's how much money is directly paid out in wages in the health care industry in Athens and the 78 other rural counties in Ohio.

The number comes from a new study done by Vlad Pascal and other folks at the Ohio University Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs.

The Ohio Department of Health also worked on the report, which found that 10 percent of the employment in rural Ohio is in health care.

In 2006, more than 285,000 health care professions worked in hospitals, doctors' offices, nursing and residential care facilities, home health agencies, dental laboratories, pharmacies and other health-related businesses.

The economic impact does not end with DIRECT payroll.

There's also the spinoff effect and it generates total wages of almost $15 billion.

Voinovich School Director Mark Weinberg says "Health care jobs typically pay higher wages than other jobs in rural areas," and "We must work together to ensure rural health care remains strong in Ohio."
