Zanesville Jail over budget
(WOUB) - Zanesville Police Chief Eric Lambes says the city jail is running over budget and they will be cutting the number of inmates by half.

Chief Lambes says jail operations are paid for by a levy that was passed 15 years ago and now costs are outrunning revenues.

The Zanesville jail currently has about 55 prisoners.

Lambes says that number will be reduced over time.

Instead of putting people behind bars, the department will consider placing them under house arrest and on probation.

Chief Lambes says other cost-cutting moves will also be implemented but what he won't do is put a new jail levy on the ballot.
