Strickland hosts town halls around the region
(2008-09-02)
(WOUB) - Strickland hosted five town hall forums on the economy throughout the Southeastern and Southern parts of Ohio.

The region is known for having a highest unemployment rate in the state.

But Strickland says Barack Obama's economic plan can help change that.

Strickland had stops scheduled for Belpre, Pomeroy, Gallipolis, Jackson and Piketon.

Obama recently sent a letter to the governor stressing the significant contributions from the Piketon Enrichment Plant to the country's national defense and energy needs and saying that he would take a number of steps as president to help "assure the future health and prosperity" of the Piketon community.

"It gives me confidence that when he becomes President," Strickland said, "I will have someone that I can work with to make sure that facility and the men and women who work there and others who need jobs there will have the support of the President."

Rural Ohio may very well play a big role in the Presidential election.

The region voted heavily in favor of George W. Bush in 2004 on his way to taking Ohio and staying in the White House.

Strickland is a native son of the area and his support in March helped Hillary Clinton take more than two-thirds of the Democratic primary vote in the region.

Now Obama is counting on Strickland to do the same for him in November and help pave the way to winning Ohio and the White House in 2008.
