Gradual progress in WV health
(2008-09-01)
(WOUB) - West Virginia has a reputation for being one of the least healthy states in the country, and the numbers bear that out.

The state is the second-fattest, behind only Mississippi. It has the highest percentage of residents afflicted with Type 2 diabetes. It ranks high in hypertension and other ailments.

But much more quietly, it has made gradual progress in meeting health goals set at the turn of the century, to be met by 2010.

The state has already surpassed the goals set by the West Virginia Healthy People 2010 plan in obesity reduction, cholesterol screening and physical activity.

Kevin Pauley, spokesman for the state chapter of the American Heart Association, says there's no question West Virginians are healthier now than a decade ago.
