Fred Dailey talks energy, economy, McCain
(WOUB) - The Athens County Republican Party opened its headquarters last night on Court Street in Athens.

Those who attended had plenty to talk about.

Earlier in the day, GOP presidential candidate John McCain picked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

That caught Fred Dailey by surprise.

"Boy John surprised us all," Dailey says. "I was guessing Mit Romney or Nick Portman. But it was a big surprise and an excellent pick. And no matter who wins the election we're gonna set history and it'll be a very exciting election to watch."

Dailey is the Republican nominee for Congress in the 18th District.

He's challenging Democrat Zack Space, who Dailey says is a stark opposite on many issues, including energy.

"I think one of the most important national policy objectives should be energy independence. We need to build, we need to drill, we need to mine, and take advantage of the coal we have in eastern Ohio," Dailey says.

And with so many people out of work around the region, Dailey is also talking a lot about the economy on the campaign trail.

He says the biggest need here in southeast Ohio is jobs, and he believes that "the best welfare program is to give someone a job."
