Lowered air-pollution limit for soot
(WOUB) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports Lawrence and Scioto counties exceed a new air-pollution limit for soot.

So do townships in Gallia and other counties.

Soot is made up of microscopic particles that can worsen breathing problems and trigger heart attacks when inhaled.

It comes from pollutants from power plants, diesel engines and factories.

Ohio has until April 2010 to lower soot below a level of 65 micrograms per cubic meter of air in 26 counties and until 2020 to take the level down to 35 micrograms.
