Shawnee State Forest begins logging, but not all are happy
(2008-08-15)
(WOUB) - Ohio Valley Veneer will begin logging in the Shawnee State Forest after being awarded a contract by Ohio's Division of Forestry Wednesday, but some people are not happy with that.

State Division of Forestry Chief David Lytle says his foresters recommended timber harvesting in the southern Ohio forest to keep it healthy.

Cheryl Carpenter is with the group Voices for the Forest.

She says the forest is already healthy and logging is not needed.

Ohio Valley Veneer got the contract with a bid of about $166,000.

It will cut 89 acres in five different sections, each one between 10 and 24 acres.

Shawnee is about 64,000 acres which is the biggest State Forest in Ohio.
