More nature preserves opening up for hunting
(WOUB) - The deer keep multiplying and the state is responding by opening up more nature preserves for hunting.

The number of preserves where hunting will be allowed this year is more than six times as many as last year.

From November second through January 24th, the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves will host special archery deer hunts in 25 out of Ohio's 131 State Nature Preserves.

Steven Maurer is chief of the Division.

Maurer says the special hunts are needed to keep the ecosystem balanced and to protect endangered plants.

Maurer says a lottery will be used to determine who will be allowed to hunt in the natural areas, including Lake Katherine in Jackson County, Desonier in Athens County and Little Rocky Hollow in Hocking County.

People who want to apply should send a postcard to the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.

How many hunters will be accepted differs from preserve to preserve.
