Glouster escapee loses appeal
(WOUB) - Ohio's Fourth District Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of an Athens County man found guilty of escaping from the Glouster Police Department last year.

In Februrary 2007, Glouster police arrested 30-year old Mathew Handa on a warrant.

Investigators say his girlfriend, 25-year-old Kyla Powell of Glouster, came to visit Handa in the police station while he was being processed.

They say he ran out when she opened the door to leave.

Handa was later arrested again and convicted of escape.

His lawyers appealed that the defense should have been originally able to argue that Handa was not legally under arrest when he fled since he had not been processed at the police station.

The Court of Appeals disagreed.

Handa is already serving six years in prison on the escape charge.

Powell was sentenced to three years in prison for complicity to escape.
