Giant sandstone sculptures bring up to $35,000
(WOUB) - It's the outcome historians did not want to see: an eastern Ohio park and its giant sandstone sculptures have been sold piecemeal.

When an auction was held Saturday, no single bidder came forward to buy and hold together Baughman Memorial Park in Frazeysburg and its larger-than-life statues of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and other famous Americans.

Auctioneer Randy Compton says a statue of Ulysses S. Grant brought the highest price, $35,000, and the same bidder bought one of George Washington for $21,000.

Local undertaker Daniel Brice Baughman carved the statues beginning in 1898.

From the 1920s through the 1940s, Baughman's 62-acre park about 60 miles east of Columbus was a tourist destination.
