Athens family temporarily fosters Haitian baby for surgery
(2008-07-21)
(WOUB) - Keith and Salem Richards soon will be saying "goodbye" to their baby son.

Schnider will be going back to Haiti.

Schnider came to live with the Richards in their Athens area home back in October.

They've been his foster parents as part of the Medical Advocacy Team program, which is providing care for children from the Caribbean and Africa.

Schnider needed surgery for a severe cleft lip and cleft palate.

Salem Richards says in Haiti many deformed children are abandoned in orphanages or left to die.

Treatment for kids like Schnider is provided by doctors and hospitals willing to donate their services.

The Medical Advocacy Team is a program of Remember International, which operates solely on private donations.
