ESPN coming to Parkersburg for "Titletown"
(2008-07-17)
(WOUB) - Parkersburg is getting a chance to take on the heavy weights in the world of sports.

The city is one of twenty finalists for the ESPN network's "Titletown" U-S-A competition.

The cable sports network is travelling to twenty cities in twenty days in an effort to determine which location is best suited to be called "Titletown" U-S-A.

ESPN producer Adam Hertzog says Parkersburg made the cut as a finalist for its success in high school sports.

The city has won 192 West Virginia State Championships between its three schools, Parkersburg, Parkersburg South and Parkersburg Catholic.

"We are going to match Parkersburg up with the New York's, Chicago's and Los Angeles's who also have a lot of title but it is a different situation when you have a whole community rally around the cause; it makes it not all about championships," Hertzog said.

ESPN is taping a segment in Parkersburg tomorrow at Stadium Field at five p-m.

The segment will air on ESPN next Tuesday.
