High fuel costs effecting Athens' budget for next year
(WOUB) - "It's going to be difficult."

Such is the assessment of Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl in regard to next year's budget, which he says might have to be trimmed from current spending levels.

Athens City Council's budget planners have asked department heads to identify cuts of up to 5 percent.

Wiehl says it may be necessary to reduce city services.

Wiehl told reporters yesterday that one of the big reasons for such intense budget scrutiny is fuel costs.

He says they're now running about $25,000 a month for Athens' fleet of vehicles.

At one point last year the figure was $17,000 a month.
