Oil drives prices up
(2008-07-14)
(WOUB) - It seems to happen every day.

The cost for a barrel of oil goes up and and the price of gasoline follows.

It's an all too familiar story.

But that's not the end of it.

Ohio University's Ann Paulins says consumers should brace themselves for higher prices beyond the pump.

Paulins is the director of the School of Human and Consumer Sciences at O-U.

She says shoppers and retailers are all getting squeezed.

The Department of Energy says besides gasoline, there are 57 major uses of petroleum - everything from ballpoint pens to chewing gum.

Reports indicate consumer product companies were trying to hold the line on prices but recently higher energy costs forced them to begin recouping their expenses.
