Program ACTIVE helps Appalachians fight diabetes
(2008-07-04)
(WOUB) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week that the number of people with diabetes increased 15% from 2005 to 2007.

The problem is even more pronounced in Appalachian Ohio, where the percentage of the population who suffer from diabetes is higher than the national average.

In an effort to help, Ohio University researchers have created Program ACTIVE, which stands for Appalachians coming together to increase vital exercise.

Diabetes is found in 11% of residents in our region, compared to eight percent elsewhere in the U.S.

According to an OU study, about 40% of hospital admissions in Appalachian Ohio in the last twelve months were for conditions complicated by diabetes.

That's almost twice the national average.
