Kudos for Athens intervention program
(WOUB) - When a police officer arrives on the scene of a potentially violent situation, there's a better chance of no one being hurt if the officer has had special training about mental illness and substance abuse.

The Athens Area Crisis Intervention Team provides such training...and has done it so well that the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ohio presented it the program of the year award.

Terry Hayes is the Chief Clinical Officer for Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling Services in Athens and an intervention team board member.

She says knowing how to deal with the mentally ill is important in Athens.

The Crisis Intervention Team is a collaborative effort involving law enforcement, the courts and the mental health system.

Training for team members is provided free of charge by the mental health community, providers, and family members of the mentally ill.

It focuses on providing practical techniques for de-escalating a crisis.
