Even if Ohio tomatoes are OK, all produce still needs washed
(WOUB) - As inspectors continue to look for the source of a nationwide salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given an all clear to Ohio-grown tomatoes.

The FDA says Ohio tomatoes are not part of the outbreak linked to three types of raw tomatoes.

McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Burger King, and Kroger are among companies that have voluntarily withdrawn red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes unless they have been grown in certain areas.

Athens City-County Health Department Director Charles Hammer says it's good to see some businesses pulling tomatoes in the best interests of safety.

In addition, he says the outbreak provides a reminder that people need to properly clean produce to protect themselves against ANY harmful bacteria.

"It's a good thing for us to get in the habit of constantly being aware of how to safely handle the food that we eat, which is healthy and safe as long as we do our part," Hammer said.

An official with the F-D-A says the agency hopes to identify the source of a nationwide salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes in the next few days.
