DUF6 plant now ready at Piketon
(WOUB) - They cut the ribbon today on a new facility at the old Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant near Piketon.

It's called the Depleted Uranium Hexafluoride Conversion Facility, the D-U-F-6 Conversion Facility for short.

The U-S Department of Energy ceremony marks the end of construction for the 250-million dollar project.

Steve Polston of Uranium Disposition Services says the next step is to make sure the equipment and the personnel are ready for the operations phase.

Uranium Disposition Services built the plant and will operate it for D-O-E...with a workforce of about 160 people.

Starting late next year, the facility will begin converting more than 250-thousand metric tons of depleted uranium into a stable chemical form of uranium...which will be packaged for re-use or disposed of.

The depleted uranium is left-over from the days when enriched uranium was being made at the Pike County plant.
