Dispute Over a Big Rock
(2008-05-29)
(WOUB) - A group of Kentucky officials is calling
for the return of Indian Head Rock, an 8-ton sandstone boulder that was removed from the Ohio River last year. The rock had been submerged since the 1920s, until an Ohio historian led efforts to have it extracted. It has a crude carving of a face and numerous initials and now sits in a city garage in Portsmouth, Ohio. Democratic Representative Reginald Meeks of Louisville says the rock belongs to Kentucky since most of the river is under its jurisdiction. Portsmouth Mayor James Kalb says the rock has historical
significance to his town, and city officials there want to permanently display it.
