State recommends measures for Cambridge deficit
(WOUB) - The state is recommending that the Cambridge City School District develop a sick leave abuse policy - to save money.

A performance audit reviewed financial systems, human resources, and technology for the district - which qualified for the audit when it was placed in fiscal caution in 2006.

The audit made additional recommendations - such as aligning staffing levels closer to state minimums, making changes to the health insurance plan, and developing a sick leave abuse policy to reduce overtime costs.

The report indicates that if these recommendations are followed, Cambridge could save nearly 1.4 million dollars a year and operate with a positive balance through 2011.

The audit says some of the district's current practices are worthy of recognition - such as reducing staffing levels, limiting spending on discretionary items, and installing computer software to improve network security.
