Construction begins for Meigs Co. coal mine
(WOUB) - Construction is underway on a new coal mining facility that Meigs County officials hope will ultimately bring 200 jobs to the area.

According to a press release, Gatling Ohio LLC expects the mine located near Racine to be fully operational early next year.

Meigs Count Commissioner Mick Davenport says the jobs will make a significant difference in the county.

An Ohio State University economic impact study determined that the project would contribute $58 million in new revenue to the area on an annual basis.

Gatling received a permit from the Ohio Department Natural Resources May 2nd.

In the process of getting that permit, some Meigs County residents had concerns about possible pollution and coal rights, among other things.

The company has a similar mining operation in Mason County, West Virginia.
