Bicyclist killed during annual Tour of the Scioto Valley
(2008-05-12)
(WOUB) - The State Highway Patrol says a bicyclist
taking part in the annual Tour of the Scioto Valley was killed on Route 23 when he was struck from behind by a motorist and thrown from his bicycle.

Cyclists in the two-day tour, which takes place each year on Mother's Day weekend, pedal the 105 miles from Columbus to Portsmouth the first day, and return to Columbus on the second day.

Fifty-seven-year-old William Crowley of Northville, Mich., was riding his bicycle north in the right lane when he was hit near Piketon at about 7:50 a.m. yesterday.

Troopers say he died at the scene.

The patrol says the driver of the car was 35-year-old Sara Bender of Lucasville.

She was not injured.
