Coin modernization act passes House
(2008-05-09)
(WOUB) - Southeast Ohio US Representative Zack Space says a bill he introduced to save money for the government and save jobs in this area, has passed the House.

It goes by the name of the Coin Modernization and Taxpayer Savings Act of 2008.

Space - a Democrat - says the measure will save an estimated $1 billion over the next 10 years by mandating that the Mint change the metallic composition of coins to a cheaper substance.

In the process, he says, the bill should lead to the lifting of a ban preventing Jackson Metals in Jackson from operating.

Jackson Metals had been removing the copper from old pennies and selling it to companies that make doorknobs and plumbing fixtures, but government officials ordered it to stop.
