Surging coal prices will boost electric rates
(2008-04-29)
(WOUB) - Surging coal prices are translating into the latest attack on consumer's wallets.

Bad weather in parts of the world and an increasing demand for coal have combined to push coal prices to their highest levels in years.

For West Virginia and Central Appalachian coal producers the per-ton price has increased from 40 dollars a ton to nearly 90 dollars a ton.

That means electric rates will be higher as coal headed to power plants costs more.

One analyst predicts the rising price for coal will boost retail electric rates by 69 percent by 2015.
