Wayne National Forest burning for habitat preservation
(WOUB) - Firefighters will be burning almost 1,500 acres of the Wayne National Forest over the next 30 days.

The so-called prescribed burn is taking place north of Route 33 in Athens County.

Wayne officials say this kind of burning maintains forest health for wildlife habitat.

It also defends areas against wildfire.

Wayne officials say they won't burn unless weather conditions are favorable so that smoke won't be a problem for nearby residents.
