Expensive litter
(WOUB) - Highway litter is not just ugly it's also expensive.

Ohio Department of Transportation spokeswoman Stephanie Filson says cleaning it up costs millions of dollars.

ODOT says nearly 10 million pounds of trash mars Ohio's roadways each year.

That's too much for the Department to effectively handle alone.

Statewide, more than 14-hundred groups have signed up for ODOT's Adopt-A-Highway program.

The groups are responsible for picking up litter and debris a minimum of four times each year.

ODOT also does education and awareness campaigns to stop litter at its source.
