Ironton policeman resigns after car accident
(WOUB) - Ironton's police chief says an
officer who dragged a man beneath his cruiser for about a half mile last month has resigned, effective today.

Chief Jim Carey says Richard Fouts submitted a letter of resignation Wednesday.

He has been with the department about three months and was on leave.

Carey has said Fouts didn't realize he'd run the man over in the snow until he arrived at the police department on March 8.

Guy Thomas was pronounced dead in the parking lot.

Test results showed Fouts was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A Franklin County autopsy said it was likely Thomas was lying in the road when he became lodged beneath the cruiser.

A nephew has said Thomas had epilepsy and may have suffered an attack in the road.
