Simon testifies in Columbus for Nelsonville bypass
(WOUB) - Officials from Athens, Meigs and Fairfield counties went to Columbus yesterday to ask state lawmakers to hurry up and finish the Nelsonville bypass.

They appeared before the Senate Transportation Committee and Jennifer Simon of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce gave testimony.

She wants senators to act to get the US 33 bypass done by 2012, five years ahead of the current Ohio Department of Transportation timetable.

Simon says doing so would help the state rebuild its economy by "having the capacity to move goods and services in the most efficient and safest way."

She says the Nelsonville bypass represents "the completion of an economic development gateway from Columbus to Ravenswood, West Virginia," a corridor that "serves the entire state of Ohio."

Simon pointed out that $330 million has already been spent on improvements to the high corridor but "a large bottleneck" remains at Nelsonville.
