Ohio Underground Railroad site to be promoted
(2008-03-17)
(WOUB) - The state Division of Tourism has joined the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in promoting sites in Ohio that were part of the escape route system for slaves fleeing the pre-Civil War South.

Zanesville is one of those sites.

A Web site and a series of kiosks to be placed around Ohio will help people plan tours of Underground Railroad locations.

The first three kiosks will be in Zanesville, Oberlin and Ripley, and three more sites are to be added later this year.

They will have downloadable maps listing attractions, restaurants, lodging and regional points of interest.

The Travel Industry Association of America says travel to heritage sites is a fast growing segment of the travel industry.

At least 35 million adults say they plan vacations around cultural or heritage activities.
