Appalachian professor compiles regional history through music
(WOUB) - An Athens man who is a native of Appalachia and grandson of a coal miner is proud of his heritage and dedicated to sharing the region's story with others.

To that end, Jack Wright has produced a two-CD set called "Music of Coal: Mining Songs from the Appalachian Coalfields."

Wright is a professor of film at Ohio University and a musician.

His collection of 48 songs from a variety of artists also includes a book that he wrote.

Wright says the collection gives a 100-year view of life in the mines and camps of Appalachia.

Wright hopes the book and CD's will be used to teach subjects like ecology, regional sociology, and poetry, and give students an appreciation of Appalachia.
