PSC approves clean-coal plant in Mason County
(WOUB) - West Virginia regulators have approved
American Electric Power's plan to build a $2.3 billion clean-coal plant in Mason County.

The Public Service Commission on Thursday issued a certificate of public convenience and necessity for the project to AEP subsidiary Appalachian Power Company.

The PSC says the 629 megawatt Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle plant is needed to help AEP meet demand for electricity.

AEP's customers will pay a surcharge to help pay for the plant's construction. The surcharge will be phased in over the four-year construction period, totaling $7.70 a month in the fourth year.

AEP plans to build the plant next to its Mountaineer generating station in New Haven.
