Bridges Closed
(2008-03-05)
(WOUB) - A highway bridge and a CSX railroad bridge spanning the Ohio River in Parkersburg are closed for inspections after being struck by barges this afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

Lieutenant Herb Lumpp of the Coast Guard's Barboursville office
says the tow boat Darin Adrien was pushing 12 barges upriver when it lost its tow due to the strong current just before 1 p.m.

The tied-together barges struck the CSX bridge.

The tow then broke apart and two barges hit the U.S. 50 bridge connecting
Parkersburg to Belpre, Ohio.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Karen Zamow says
a preliminary inspection found scrape marks on the highway bridge.

A more thorough inspection is planned.

Zamow says the bridge likely would remain closed until the inspection is complete.

A Coast Guard crew is investigating the accident.
