Athens Job and Family Services calls on government for help
(WOUB) - Local officials who assist the poor of Athens, Hocking and Vinton counties are calling on the state and federal governments to do more to help.

Job and Family Services, Children Services and mental health program directors yesterday announced a joint effort to convince the governor, the General Assembly, the president and Congress to take action.

Jack Frech is director of Athens County Job and Family Services.

He says programs like Supplemental Security Income and Food Stamps aren't providing the needy with sufficient food, clothing and shelter.

The group says child welfare, mental health and substance abuse needs also "are growing worse."

Under the banner "Don't Turn Away, Ohio", the three county coalition is asking for, among other things, a 100 dollar per month increase in state public assistance benefits...and an increase in Food Stamp benefits -- from 10 dollars a month to 100 at the minimum level.
