Low-income families build their way into new homes
(WOUB) - In the past four years, 19 low-income families in Athens County have moved into new homes, thanks to a cooperative, do-it-yourself program.

It's called the Mutual Self Help Housing Program and it's operated by the Three Rivers Housing Corporation in The Plains.

Executive Director Barbara Conover says it works by putting groups of families together to build the homes.

Recently, Three Rivers received a $5,000 grant to promote the Mutual Self Help Program, which also incorporates loans subsidized by the government.

The families must put in 30 hours a week on the houses.

Typically, construction takes 6 to 8 months.
