Trimble forest represents community effort for wildilife conservation
(2008-02-18)
(WOUB) - As the name indicates, the Trimble Township Community Forest is a forest.

But it's not just a bunch of trees.

To the residents of the area in northern Athens County, it's a special place because it represents a home-grown effort to conserve wildlife habitat.

Kaabe Shaw is watershed coordinator for the Sunday Creek Watershed Group, and he points out the 1,200-acre Trimble Township Forest is located between a section of the Wayne National Forest and the Trimble Wildlife Area.

It used to be called Taylor Ridge.

That was before the hardwood forest was bought by the Appalachian Ohio Alliance from the Sunday Creek Coal Company and turned over to the community for hiking and hunting, and for students to use as a land lab.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife helped purchase the property and provides assistance to a local citizens committee that manages the forest.
