Kentucky governor wants to open 12 casinos
(2008-02-18)
(WOUB) - Kentucky's governor wants to open 12 casinos in the Bluegrass State, including one in Ashland.

Governor Steve Beshear also proposed a seven-member Gaming Commission to regulate the casinos if they open.

Beshear says Kentucky officials have been wrestling with the issue for over a decade and he thinks it's now time to let the people decide.

Although Kentucky has a long tradition of wagering at horse tracks, state law specifically forbids casinos. Beshear wants lawmakers to approve a measure that would allow Kentucky voters to change the constitution to allow them.

Beshear had made the casino proposal a centerpiece in his campaign last year against former Governor Ernie Fletcher, saying such a move would generate needed revenue for state government.
