Sheriff's race incumbent and challenger butt heads over legal past
(WOUB) - Athens County Sheriff Vern Castle says his Democrat opponent is not trustworthy.

As evidence, Castle released information Thursday about Pat Kelly's run-ins with the law in 1986 and 1998.

Kelly served jail time in 1986 for failing to pay child support and in 1998 faced perjury charges.

He admits past mistakes but says they would not affect his ability to be a good sheriff.

Kelly also refuted Castle's claim that the challenger is inexperienced.

Kelly says he worked with Castle for 20 years, helping the incumbent to get elected sheriff.

Castle initially announced that he would retire but changed his mind when Kelly surfaced as the only Democrat candidate.
