Longaberger to cut jobs
(2008-02-13)
(WOUB) - Blaming a tough economy, central Ohio's Longaberger Company has laid off 200 of its basket makers.

Spokesman Tom Matthews says the company hopes those employees will eventually be called back.

He says Longaberger will begin hiring for seasonal positions soon, and the workers from the basket-making operation will be welcome to apply for those jobs.

The company based in Newark also says it has streamlined its senior management, eliminating 25 positions.

Matthews says the job cuts are part of a broader plan to make the basket maker a stronger company in the future.

Matthews adds that in tough economic times Longaberger faces more challenges than other manufacturers since it makes its product by hand.
