Report suggests asbestos is in Chillicothe prison
(WOUB) - A state prison report suggests a southern Ohio prison was laden with dangerous asbestos despite an official's claims otherwise.

The Columbus Dispatch has obtained a survey showing prison officials feared the tiled floor and pipe insulation at the
Chillicothe Correctional Institution contained cancer-causing asbestos.

Prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Lyons has said the state has spent more than $300,000 since 2005 to remove or contain the substance.

A federal lawsuit filed on behalf of inmates accuses the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction of lying about efforts to remove asbestos from the floors.

The chemical is a health risk only if it is crumbling or airborne.
