Hopewell nominated for world heritage status
(2008-02-13)
(WOUB) - The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ross County has made the cut for the U.S. Park Service's list of nominated sites to be considered for world heritage status.

The final selection process could take up to a decade.

Dean Alexander, superintendent of the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, says he thinks the park's review will go well because it has some of the best preserved and documented archeological features in the U.S.

The Ohio Historical Society helped put together the recommendation for Hopewell in late 2006, when the National Park Service put out a call for nominations.

If the nomination is approved, the park will receive worldwide recognition and could expect park visits to increase significantly.

Hopewll would not receive additional funding as part of the recognition from the World Heritage Commission, but it could use the recognition to their advantage in requesting future state and federal funding.
