Florida sex offender found in Ross County
(WOUB) - A convicted sex offender wanted in Florida for nearly the last 20 years is in custody in Ross County.

Ross County Sheriff Ron Nichols says deputies apprehended 41-year old Joseph Murphy after a standoff last night at an apartment on East Main Street in Chillicothe.

After receiving a warrant for his arrest from Florida, deputies went to Murphy's work place to bring him in Friday but he fled when he saw them coming.

Nichols says authorities found Murphy two days later holed up in the apartment with a gun and he threatened to shoot himself if anyone entered the residence.

After more than an hour, he gave himself up and deputies discovered that he was holding a B.B. gun.

Nichols says Murphy was originally convicted in Florida in 19-88 of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

He was released on probation two years later and fled Florida for Ohio.

Nichols says Murphy changed his identity and lived under an assumed name and social security number in Chillicothe.

Murphy has waived extradition and authorities from Florida are on their way to Ohio to take him into custody.
