Strickland gets mixed reviews over plan
(2008-02-08)
(WOUB) - Governor Ted Strickland's plan for a director for the Ohio Department of Education is getting mixed support from state legislative leaders.

Strickland proposed creation of the new position in his State of the State address yesterday.

He wants to appoint a director who would oversee all state and primary education.

State Senate Minority Leader Ray Miller applauds the proposal.

Ditto for House Minority Leader Joyce Beatty.

Like Strickland, they are Democrats.

Republican leaders aren't so sure.

Senate President Bill Harris wants to see specifics of the plan before passing final judgement.

House Speaker Jon Husted wants to know if the proposal will impact on charter schools.

All four spoke this morning at an Ohio Associated Press gathering in Columbus.

Governor Strickland says the current education structure with a state Board of Education and state superintendent is unwieldy and has splintered accountyability.
