State Budget Cuts
(WOUB) - Governor Strickland says the state will cut up to 2,700 jobs and close two mental hospitals as a way to deal with its budget troubles.

Strickland also is issuing orders that will limit travel, new
contracts, equipment purchases and other spending.

The cuts are part of Strickland's plan to deal with a budget shortfall that could total nearly $2 billion by June 2009.

The governor says he'll protect tax reforms, property tax breaks for senior citizens, the tuition freeze for college students and the expansion of children's health care.

Those were in the state budget that went into effect July First.

Strickland says if the situation worsens, he'll consider using money from the state's emergency fund.
