OU student does not have bacterial meningitis
(2008-01-23)
(WOUB) - An Ohio University student does not have bacterial meningitis.

Athens City - County Health Department Administrator Charles Hammer says the test results for the 21 year old Junior came back negative this morning for the highly contagious and potentially fatal infection.

He says the student had initial symptoms of bacteria meningitis and early test results gave indications that the infection might have been present.

But... Hammer says more comprehensive tests indicate that the student did not have the disease.

The student was hospitalized and treated as though he had the infection.

Comprehensive testing takes about three days and Hammer says it is common to treat suspected cases of bacteria meningitis as actually cases until test results come back.

In addition, individuals who were in contact with the student had been informed about the possibility of infection and were advised to take preventative anti-bacteria medication.
