Crisis Intervention Team trained officers recognized for work
(WOUB) - It's estimated that 10 percent of all law enforcement calls involve someone with mental illness issues.

Officers in the Athens area are better preparded than most to deal with that thanks to a Crisis Intervention Team.

Participants are trained to recognize and understand mental illness, mental health law and effective communication techniques.

One trainer says the team "has been a great success because it has resulted in several hundred jail diversions for the mentally ill" since it was started five years ago.

Yesterday, many of the officers gathered in Athens to be recognized for their work.

WOUB's Karen Hopkins was there.

The Crisis Intervention team has trained 107 local law enforcement officers from 19 departments since 2003.
