New report: Many lose homes, lives while waiting for disability benefits
(WOUB) - A new report finds that many people in the region have lost their homes while waiting to receive Social Security disability benefits.

Some have even lost their lives, according to an Athens County Job and Family Services study.

Agency director Jack Frech says 60 to 70 percent of applicants are denied benefits, although most are approved after appealing.

He says the disabled person is hurt further when his or her case is bogged down by the bureaucracy.

The Social Security Administration says disability denials frequently are due to under-staffing and under-funding, and the agency has developed improvement plans.

Officials also have asked Congress for more funding.

In the meantime, Frech advises people wanting disability benefits to keep accurate, thorough medical records.
